Bay of Islands Adventures You’ll Never Forget

whether you’re into water sports, hiking, or just chilling on a beach, there’s something for everyone.

When I moved to New Zealand, the Bay of Islands was one of the first places I explored. It’s like a playground for outdoor enthusiasts—whether you’re into water sports, hiking, or just chilling on a beach, there’s something for everyone.

Sailing and Snorkelling

One of my favourite bay of islands adventures was joining a day cruise around the islands. We sailed to hidden coves, jumped into the clear blue water, and snorkelled among colourful fish. At one point, we even spotted a pod of dolphins swimming alongside the boat.

Tip: Bring a waterproof camera if you have one. Some of the underwater views are stunning, and you’ll want to capture the moment.

Kayaking to Secret Bays

Another highlight was renting a kayak and paddling to some of the lesser-known bays. It’s hard work, but the reward is worth it. We found a secluded spot where we had the beach all to ourselves.

Tip: Check the tides before heading out. It’s much easier to paddle with the current than against it.

Exploring Historic Sites

The Bay of Islands isn’t just about nature—it’s also rich in history. We visited a site where early settlers and Māori first interacted. Walking through these places gave me a new appreciation for New Zealand’s heritage.

Tip: Take your time at these sites. There’s often more to discover than just what’s on the surface.

Making the Most of Your Trip

  • Plan Ahead: While spontaneous trips are great, having a loose plan ensures you don’t miss out on the best spots.
  • Mix Activities: Balance high-energy adventures with more relaxed experiences. A day on the water followed by a quiet beach walk is the perfect combo.
  • Bring the Right Gear: Comfortable shoes, swimwear, and a good backpack are essentials.
